Hello to you...
We're cooling our heels after returning from Los Angeles, where we played a couple of shows with some great bands. Big thanks to Merrick, James Combs, The Hoof, and Michael Miller, as well as the Knitting Factory and the Prospector. And great big thanks to Jennifer and Sam of Inner for letting ALL of us crash for 3 days in their pad! So generous, not to mention tolerant.
The Prospector... now there is a most curious bar! This place is decked out in a full Western motif... we felt a little like the Blues Brothers walking into that bar with all the chicken wire. The sound system didn't show up until 10:30, and we were the third band to play. By nearly 1:00 am we were on the stage playing for a very enthusiastic crowd of people, though, and it was great fun. I think my favorite Prospector moment was the waitress coming up to our table while we were eating dinner. Our dialog went like this:
Waitress: "Do you mind if the people at that table next to you smoke?"
Nils: "Yes, actually."
Waitress: "Oh. Well, later they're going to be smoking anyway. We do that here at this bar, even though it's against the law in California. Just thought you should know!"
Nils: "Then why are you asking us?"
Waitress: "I just thought I'd be courteous!"
Other moments of fun came at the Santa Monica beach boardwalk, where we jockeyed for position as bumper car champion and devoured the heavenly goodness known as cotton candy. And did you know that in certain places in LA you can pay $14 for the movie going experience of your life? Such a bargain, with assigned seating as well.
Please join us for our only Bay Area show this month... Saturday July 27th at the Bottom of the Hill with Smokey and Miho (featuring members of Beck, Tom Waits, Cibo Mato and Gorillaz), and I Am The World Trade Center (NY). After that we are hiding away for a couple months, secretly concocting new recipes for mung bean casserole, peering out only for Nadine Wild Weekend on August 24th at Bottom of the Hill.
Love,
Nils
